Hey I just started working for 1-800 Contacts and there are several job openings with them. The company is awesome tons of perks, free breakfast, in-house cafeteria $2.50 for sirloin steak lunch, and a whole bunch more. Also the job would involve programming with cutting edge technology in C# (the software job anyway) Work flow and TFS are a couple of the technologies we are using. For those that have been frequenting this website for job postings or information, I am sorry that I haven't updated in awhile. There was a family emergency that that took up a large amount of my free time this last week.

Open Positions at Avalanche Software

I just received an email today about job openings at Avalanche Software and its sister company Fall Line. I have been working at Avalanche for about four months and it is really fun. We are owned by Disney and we develop video games in downtown Salt Lake City.

Avalanche is looking for an executive producer and Fall Line is looking for a Rigger. Both of these require very experienced skill sets, but they are always looking for anyone with talent and sufficient experience. Other specific positions aren't available until early next year.

Job opportunities at Xactware

I received an email from my USU mailing list about Xactware looking for software developers. It was mainly aimed towards recent or upcoming grads from USU, but the job is open on their job site here.

Here is a description of that they request:

Salary range of 60-75K per year + benefits

Qualifications: Qualifications:
1.Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from four-year college or university with minimum 3.0 GPA.
2.English Language; Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
3.Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
4.Fluent in the following: C# or C++ with Java. SQL, XML, JavaScript experience helpful.

They are located in Orem, but close enough to visit them for an interview if they are interested. I actually interviewed with them earlier this year and was impressed with how their business operates. I accepted another offer, but they were definitely at the top of my list. If anyone gets an appointment for an interview, let me know and I can give you some tips on what they ask you.

I just received an email from Christian Jackson about a part time job as a teller at JPMorgan Chase. Take a look below if this job interests you:

I have an urgent need for a bank teller at our Alta View location at Chase Bank. I know that it is far but it is great hours if you need a job while you are in school. The hours would be from 3:15-7:15 and they would have to work every other Saturday (still getting a day off during the week) the hours very on Saturday anywhere from 8:45-3:15 on that Saturday. I threw a couple extra comments in the job description in red to make the bank requirement a little clearer. The base starts out at 9.50 an hour and can move, with experience, up to 10.50 a lot of the compensation comes from referrals that the tellers make. I see a lot of tellers that make a ton extra when they are really doing their job with referrals. We don't require the teller to sell our products but instead refer the customer back to personal bankers to sell the product.

Job Hunting

I am sure that the majority of people have experienced the job hunting process and how stressful it can be. I have personally been in the situation of job hunting for months and being very frustrated.

I found a guide that has ten easy steps for job hunting. The author is James C. Gonyea, who has worked in career guidance for over 30 years. Below is a quote from the guide:

As a career counselor, I am often called upon to give advice regarding the best way to undertake a job search. After 30 years of experience, I can tell you that job hunting is one of those tasks in life that can cause a great deal of stress. If a rating scale of major stress producers existed, job hunting would certainly be third on the list after the death of a loved one or divorce from a spouse.

The main cause of this stress is the fact that you have to sell yourself to others, usually strangers, with little or no training in how to sell yourself. This situation is similar to asking someone out on a date - if the answer is no, it's rejection and that's painful. As a result, many people do as little as possible when attempting to find employment hoping that, through some miracle, a job will fall into their laps. This failing strategy is often used even though these same job seekers fully understand the importance of work in their life.

If this sounds familiar, take heart, there's good news! The process of searching for employment can be made more bearable and your chances of success increased if you approach the task correctly by using proven job hunting techniques. Finding employment is a task that requires certain knowledge and skills in order to complete successfully - knowledge and skills that you can easily develop.

If you read each step, this blog actually is part of step 5, which is determined to give you the resources to help you find a job. Please note that while this article contains very useful advice, it was written in 1999, so it is out of date. He gives advice about sending letters, which can now be replaced with an email for many fields. From my experience in job hunting, I would communicate first by email and second over the phone. Please give this a read, because it contains sound advice.

Things to do while looking for work

When job hunting, I've personally had a lot of free time. In fitting with the theme of the blog, here is a recipe for bacon chocolate chip cookies. You can literally bring the bacon home and make a delicious dessert for yourself or for your friends. Despite what the website tells you how delicious these cookies are, I am skeptical. In the rare occasions that I have attempted to make cookies, I would not want to make these.

If anyone actually makes these cookies, let us know. I am sure that Amee and Melissa would love to try one!

Career placement tests

As part of the job seeking process, it is common to have no idea what jobs you can fulfill. The last career placement test have taken may have been in high school. Don't think that online tests will give you the same outdated information.

The Internet has a significant amount of resources, providing up-to-date information from a variety of sources. From a rough search on Google with the keywords "career placement test free" I turned up a variety of sites. I found one article from alec.co.uk that has a listing of some of these tests and a description for each. Below is an excerpt of the beginning of the article:

To be happy and successful in your working life, it’s important that you ensure your abilities, values and personality are well matched to those needed for your chosen career. On top of that, they need to align with those of the organisation you’re working for.

Lots of people are now turning to free online career tests in order to assess themselves. They are quick to complete and can help you discover your strengths, in terms of your skills, knowledge and personal qualities. They then offer you an individual analysis (usually computer generated) and some recommended career options.

I haven't looked through all the links in the article, but two of them are broken; however, the rest work just fine. Since many of these are trimmed down versions of tests that cost money, I recommend you be cautious on entering any requested personal information. I would also be cautious on spending money on a more thorough test without considering the legitimacy of the website.

Another resource is also just looking at listings for jobs that you are interested in. I found that collegegrad.com contained listings of careers and also salary.

We all come from different levels of experience and talents, so you might fit a job that you never knew existed. These links are of what I found in a limited amount of time, so search for more if you are really interested.

Nelson Labs is hiring

I just got an email from Esther Udall mentioning that her work is hiring. I did a bit of investigation and Nelson Labs has a career section of their website. You can submit an application as well as view the available positions. Below is a quote from their website about what the company does:

Salt Lake Professional Placement Program

This next monday there is a networking meeting, which looks to be a great way to meet new people. There are also workshops on the 1st 3rd and 5th week on Tuesday and Wednesday. These should definitely help the job seeking process.

Updates

I just made some updates to the information on the right. First, I added two more links.

The Department of Workforce Services has a listing of jobs local to Utah, which is the same system as what you would find at their offices. I used this website a few years ago in my job search and got a few interviews out of it.

Next is yourutahjob.com, which is a compilation of the job classifieds from both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News. Instead of needing the paper, you can instead check this website and apply for jobs as soon as they are posted. My brother a few years ago got a summer job through this website, so it can happen.

Lastly, I added two new events to the calendar. They are both for the University of Utah's tech fair and Utah State University's tech expo. I have personally attended USU's tech expo and it was a great experience.

Career Expo 2008

Here is an event that I would suggest everyone attending. This weekend there is a career expo this Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6. Each day it is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Towne Expo Center at 9575 S. State in sandy. Here is a map if you need help getting there. It is also free admission with free parking.

Like any career expo, there are around 40 exhibitors who are looking to hire. The website includes a full list, so take a look at which companies interest you and what they have to offer.

I have had many experiences at career expos before, because I just graduated from USU. The job I have right now is because I visited my company at a career expo. Even if you don't see a particular company that interests you, go anyways and you might be surprised what types of jobs are offered.

There are also workshops every hour that cover topics like resumes, cover letters, and the ever important interview. I have a list of the times of the workshops, which I could not find on the official website. I would recommend attending the Resume workshop at 10:15 Friday or Saturday or the Interviewing workshop at 1:00pm either day.
